Leaving the airport, the road heads east towards Fethiye before joining the coast highway that continues on to Kaş and, eventually, Antalya. Past Fethiye it drops into the wide, flat Eşen valley — greenhouses and citrus groves on both sides — then climbs back up along the cliffs above the sea. The final stretch, cut into the hillside just past the Patara turn-off, is where the drive earns its reputation: pine-covered slopes, small coves glimpsed far below, and the water turning a deeper blue the closer you get to Kalkan.

Kalkan rises in tiers above its own small harbour, whitewashed houses linked by narrow, stepped lanes with bougainvillea spilling over almost every wall. There's no high-rise resort strip here — the hillside is given over to private villas with pools, a cluster of boutique hotels, and rooftop restaurants that catch the sunset over the bay. Days tend to mean a boat trip along the coast or the short run to Kaputaş, one of the best-known coves on this stretch of coastline; evenings gravitate back to the harbour front. It's a town people return to on purpose, not just pass through.
