From Dalaman the road heads east towards Fethiye, then continues along the coast highway that carries on to Kaş and Antalya. Beyond Fethiye it drops into the wide Eşen valley — flat, green, and given over to greenhouses and citrus groves — before the turn-off for Patara appears, well before the road starts climbing again toward Kalkan. It's a shorter, gentler run than the routes further along this coast, with the valley floor giving way to dunes as the sea gets close, and the mountains staying at a distance rather than crowding the road.

Patara's beach is the longest stretch of sand on Turkey's Mediterranean coast, backed by dunes and, just behind them, the ruins of ancient Patara — once chief port of the Lycian League and, tradition holds, the birthplace of Saint Nicholas. One of the world's oldest known lighthouses, built under the Roman emperor Nero, still stands here after a recent restoration. Loggerhead turtles nest on the beach through the summer, which is why the area keeps set opening hours and next to no development behind it. The village itself, Gelemiş, is a handful of family-run pensions and restaurants rather than a resort.
